The curtain guide

A good place to start.

Choose a style direction, understand the measurements and bring a little more clarity to your window.

01 / Light & look

How do you want
the room to feel?

There’s no one right curtain for every window. Start with what matters to you. These suggestions describe style directions, not a guarantee of fit or privacy.

01 · What would you like to do?
02 · Which look speaks to you?
03 · Is nighttime privacy important?

Sheer

Lets light through for a visually open window. Not reliable on its own for nighttime privacy.

Light filtering

Softens incoming light. Privacy depends on the fabric and lighting; it does not mean blackout.

Room darkening

Reduces incoming light. Gaps, color and installation still affect the room’s darkness.

Blackout

A listing classification to check carefully. It is not a promise of complete light exclusion in every setup.

02 / Width planning

Measure first.
Make room for folds.

This tool plans flat-width, ready-made panels. Valances and the Max pinch-pleated style are excluded: a topper does not close the full window, and Max’s listed width is not verified as flat fabric width. The tool is also unsuitable for other fixed-width pleated headers, mixed panel widths, bay or corner windows, or motorized systems. Check product and hardware instructions for those setups.

Enter the flat width of one panel and the panel count from your exact listing.
The usable rod or track span you want closed curtains to cover, not just the glass.
Use per-panel width, not the combined pair width.
Examples to compare, not product-specific recommendations.
Balanced rounds up to an even panel count.

Rod coverage and flat panel width are different measurementsA horizontal rod above two gathered curtains. Measure the usable span you want to cover. The panel width on a listing describes the ungathered fabric.Intended coverage along the rodFlat fabric width is measured before gathering.
Planning illustration, not to scale. Measure the span to cover, excluding decorative finials. No automatic rod extension is added.

03 / Length & hanging

Where it begins.
Where it falls.

Choose the hem position first. Then establish the correct measurement origin for the hanging method: the fabric top, rod pocket, ring attachment and rod top are different points.

  1. Decide where the rod or track will sit and what you want the hem to meet.
  2. Read the exact variant’s length definition and hardware instructions. Pinch-pleated headers use different attachment points from rod pockets.
  3. Confirm whether the header is included. The checked Voile and Jacquard listings exclude a 1.5-in top header from nominal length.
  4. Do not add or subtract the header height as a universal rod-to-floor adjustment. The actual hanging drop depends on the attachment.
  5. Check rod compatibility. Pocket size is not the same measurement as maximum rod diameter.

We do not recommend a nearest length when the measurement origin or available size is unconfirmed.
